Côte d’Ivoire: Security Prolonged

In an effort to consolidate stability in the country, the Security Council has expanded the mandate of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI, est. 2004) until the end of the year. The decision by the council was unanimous to allow the UNOCI and the supporting French forces the mandate to, amongst other things, monitor armed groups and the arms embargo, promote the peace process, support humanitarian assistance, and protect civilians and their human rights.

The mission also aims to promote and help organise free and fair elections; support the redeployment of the country’s state administration and justice systems; and help to reform the security sector. It appears to be a step in the right direction to regaining peace and stability .throughout the nation.
