Kenya: New CGIAR HQ?
The country is pushing to be the new headquarters for the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). It is the only African Member in the final shortlist. In return for becoming CGIAR HQ, it will offer office facilities and major tax concession to staff members of the global body. President Kibaki made the pledge when he met and held discussions with Carl Hausmann, the CGIAR Consortium Board Vice Chairman who paid him a courtesy call in Nairobi on Monday 12th July. The nation already seems to be amounting an impressive record that might help its chances. Kibaki noted that the collaboration with international research centres has allowed the country to conduct comprehensive research programmes on maize, wheat, potatoes and other major cash crops in the region. He also said that the country has benefitted from the research infrastructure established by the centres and also offered employment to Kenyans.
