Nigeria: President Reconsiders Birthday Budget

Mounting criticism has led to President Goodluck Jonathan to slash the expenses for the country’s Golden Jubilee from N16.4 billion to N9.5 billion. The adjustments were included in the latest amended supplementary budget released on July 7th. In a letter to the National Assembly Jonathan listed ‘slight amendments’ that would result in cost cuts. Although this can obviously be considered as progress the budget is still condemned as being too high. Osita Izunaso (People’s Democratic Party, Imo State) presented another grievance. He argued that since Nigeria gained independence 50 years ago it has not achieved any meaningful progress that justifies such ostentatious celebrations. ‘Nigeria at 50, to me, has not achieved anything worthy of celebration’, he said.
