Tanzania: World Bank donate US $150m to improve power
The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved a project in the country to improve the quality of grid based power supply in northern regions. The US $150 million donated by the Bank will go towards the Backbone Transmission Investment Project and attempt to improve the availability and reliability of Tanzania’s energy suppliers.
The project will be separated into two key areas, the first dealing with the construction of transmission lines, while the second stage will focus on developing the quality of technical assistance by companies like Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). And estimated US$ 10 million will be allocated to TANESCO to help with their efforts.
The funding has been welcomed by commentators, it is hoped that it will not only lighten the load for poor and vulnerable citizens, but also aid the country’s economy by supporting key industries.
